A Trip to Alaska in Three Parts

Part 1 - North to Alaska!

“Nobody is accidentally in Alaska”

- Unknown

Way back in August of 2023, we loaded our new camper van onto the ferry M/V Columbia and set off for Alaska. The Alaska Marine Highway technically begins in Bellingham, Washington and traverses through Canadian waters via the Inside Passage before actually getting to Southwest Alaska where it continues up to Dutch Harbor in the Aleutian Islands. We got off in Juneau. It was a three day trip, and the Alaska Marine Highway does not allow anyone to stay in their vehicles during passage, so we booked a room. This is a series of snapshots from that trip.

From the Alaska Department of Transportation Website: The M/V Columbia is named after the Columbia Glacier, a glacier in Prince William Sound. [It] is the largest vessel of the fleet, and…is 418 feet long and 85 feet wide…[It]is designed to carry 499 passengers and has a vehicle capacity of 2,660 linear feet, which is equal to approximately 133 twenty-foot vehicles (ours is 19). There are 45 four-berth and 56 two-berth cabins, as well as 3 wheelchair-accessible cabins.
